WELCOME
This platform connects Ethiopian-American students living in the United States with Ethiopian students who want to improve their English speaking skills. Our goal is to create meaningful and consistent conversations that help students build confidence, fluency, and opportunity through regular English practice.
HOW THE CALLS WORK
After filling out either the Student Form (for Ethiopian students) or the Tutor Form (for Ethiopian-American volunteers), each student will be paired with one tutor. The tutor and student will meet regularly, approximately once or twice a week, to practice speaking English. Each session should last around thirty minutes and will take place on an online platform that works best for both individuals, such as Zoom, Google Meet, Telegram, or WhatsApp. The specific meeting times will be arranged directly between the tutor and student based on their availability.
Every student must start the program at Lesson 1 in the Beginner Path, and skipping lessons is not allowed, no matter how much the student knows. Each path has five lessons that the student must complete with their tutor. When the student completes a path, they will receive a certificate. Each path should take 2-4 months to complete.
Beginner Path: This path focuses on building basic vocabulary, confidence, and simple sentence structure.
Lesson 1: Introductions and Basic Conversation
Students learn how to introduce themselves, say where they are from, describe their family, and ask simple questions. They will also learn how to count and say how old they are.
Lesson 2: Daily Life and Routines
Students practice talking about their daily schedule, school, work, hobbies, and common activities.
Lesson 3: Describing People and Feelings
Students learn adjectives and practice describing their friends/family, aswell as learn to describe emotions.
Lesson 4: Shopping, Clothes and Colors
Students should learn about shopping, clothes, and colors. They should be able to describe whether something is too expensive, or cheap, and weather or not they like a piece of clothing.
Lesson 5: Food and Beverages
In this lesson, students will learn how the names for different types of food and beverages, aswell as how to describe how they taste. They will also learn how to order food in a restaurant.
Intermediate Path: The Intermediate Path focuses on expanding vocabulary, improving grammar accuracy, and developing longer conversations.
Lesson 1: Describing Places and Weather
In this lesson, students will learn how to describe their city, as well as the weather in their city.
Lesson 2: Jobs and Careers
Students learn vocabulary related to different professions and workplaces. They practice talking about what they do, where they work, and what job they would like in the future.
Lesson 3: Health and Wellness
Students learn vocabulary related to exercise, sleep, healthy habits, and common illnesses. They practice describing how they feel and talking about ways to stay healthy.
Lesson 4: Holidays and Special Events
Students learn vocabulary related to celebrations, traditions, and special occasions. They practice describing holidays in their country and talking about how they celebrate with family and friends.
Lesson 5: Transportation
Students learn vocabulary related to buses, trains, taxis, and airports. They practice asking for directions, talking about travel plans, and discussing how they get to different places.
Advanced Path: The Advanced Path focuses on fluency, critical thinking, and professional communication.
Lesson 1: Technology and Devices
Students learn vocabulary related to phones, computers, and the internet. They practice explaining how they use technology and asking for help with simple technical problems.
Lesson 2: Workplace communication
Students learn vocabulary related to meetings, schedules, coworkers, and tasks. They practice asking for clarification and explaining responsibilities.
Lesson 3: Professional Introductions and Networking
Students practice introducing themselves in academic or professional settings and speaking about their goals confidently.
Lesson 4: Debate and Critical Thinking
Students discuss complex topics and practice supporting their opinions with clear arguments and examples.
Lesson 5: Presentation Skills
Students prepare and deliver a 20 minute presentation (just to their tutor) on everything they have learned in this program!
By participating in this program, you agree that this platform is intended solely for English language practice and educational support. All participants are expected to conduct themselves respectfully and appropriately at all times. Harassment, discrimination, bullying, or any form of inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and may result in immediate removal from the program.
Participants agree to make a reasonable effort to attend scheduled sessions and to respect each other’s time. Repeated failure to attend meetings without communication may lead to removal from the program. Participants are also responsible for maintaining appropriate boundaries and for protecting their personal information during online communication.
This platform facilitates introductions between tutors and students but does not supervise individual sessions. Each participant is responsible for their own behavior during meetings. If a report of misconduct is submitted and verified, the participant in question will be permanently removed from the program.
The platform and its organizers are not liable for any actions, statements, or outcomes that occur during or as a result of these meetings.

REPORTING
If at any point you experience inappropriate behavior, you may submit a report using the designated reporting form. Any verified report of inappropriate conduct will result in removal from the program and termination of the match. We are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for everyone involved.
Both tutors and students are allowed to file a report using this form.
SCHEDULING CONFLICTS
If you and your partner find that you are unable to continue meeting due to scheduling conflicts, availability changes, or other reasonable circumstances, you may submit a regroup request form. We will then work to assign a new match so that you can continue participating in the program.
